just in time for this years festive celebrations, the imprint curated by merseyside edits maestro greg wilson returns with the tape-tapping talent of fingerman. real name gregg holmes, wilson first thought his fingerman pseudonym was inspired by a character from v for vendetta, the cult graphic novel by alan moore, but he was in fact so called after creating a weird stop motion video on a mobile phone about a shouting finger. thankfully his studio work is less peculiar: years of spinning techno in the mid-90s giving way more recently to an going love affair with funk, soul and disco nuggets.

croatias miss sunshine brings you some seriously pounding, no-nonsense techno action. backyard is a freight train of bass and beat, no less. inter gritty is on remix duty and recalibrates it to hypnotic, bass-heavy monotony. on the flipside, wake up call takes it deeper with lush pads piling up on a powerful beat.

praterei turns 8, if releases were years and to celebrate, proffers a stamped 10 from label swami, 7 citizens. >do your head in< is charged with a side duties and a bit of a cerebral poke it is too. flirting somewhere betwixt both reverie and nightmare, it’s as playful as it is tormenting. it invites you round for a cup of tea, slaps you about a bit and calls you names before putting you to bed and whispering slightly sexy things in your lughole. >stride< is an altogether less hairy affair. its honest. its honest about the fact you are going to need a safe word. an acid romp with unwavering purpose.

tim heckers masterpiece *mirages*, originally released only on cd in 2004 by alien8 recordings, finally gets a proper double 12 inch vinyl release, remastered and housed in a gatefold sleeve..

teamed up with running back for a vinyl release, bubbletease communications releases are defiantly infrequent, reflecting boss man maurice fultons desire to only release personal projects and those hes somehow had a hand in. given fultons track record, this approach guarantees a high quality threshold in truth, bubbletease releases are rarely less than excellent. this four-tracker from tokyo-based dj nori, co-produced by fulton, is predictably impressive.

were drifting a little deeper and less dubby with our second release. glos is hailing from cologne but his origins are deeply rooted to berlin where he grew up. his sound tends to be extremely deep and atmospheric but still straight and danceable as he often proves his versatility.

the seventh instalment in lo sheas series of 10 vinyl only releases on seaghdha. you know by now how this goes - precision club workouts, which ricochet between uk flavoured jams, to clean cut techno & stripped down house. vasquez leads the charge here, less about the legendary captain of the soundfactory, and more the soundtrack to a drug deal gone bad in downtown miami. like her flails around a bowel troubling low end and crisp snare double act, piling on the pressure with an unrelenting groove and some deftly applied distortion. elsewhere 365247 is in more familiar lo shea / seaghdha territory, with some expertly manipulated, atmospheric sampling laid over a spare, shuffle-happy herbertesque workout. finally flash gives us a glimpse into sleepless basement, inhabited by addled humanoids, playing glass bottles.

another hot new osl(n)orwegian talent high on the heels of thomas, hp, terje and the likes tarjei nygard, head of untz untz records is no complete unknown on the international circuit. and will be even less after this release.

2013 repress / release number 6 from our label brings us oscar muleros latest work, proof that the new sounds hes experimenting with do not constitute at all a departure from his command of the rawest side of the purest techno. horses, oscar muleros new ep, takes us back to the mulero that the majority of the public will recognise, to the overwhelming sound that has led him straight to the top over the past two decades. the record opens with like a wolf: broken drum beats, sharp hats, fm basses and dynamic white noise drones whose energy never falters throughout the track. horses, the second track, gives the record its name and offers intricate rhythm programming, dark atmospheres and acid sounds that, as a whole, create a mental and hypnotic feeling. the closing track is in a silent way, which runs along similar lines to the previous two, but with less bpms and with an obsessive sequence that mutates and develops throughout the track leaving the listener with a mills aftertaste, but with a berliner touch.

a bunch of bubbling uk deep house players line up on introducing newington, a new label of the same name that is clearly fond of the n16 postcode with vocal house on the menu. ejeca, the irishman earmarked as the next bicep, keeps up his relentless form this year with the opening track robodrum which is a playful shuffling little house number that rotates between stabbing vocal samples and piercing chords. moving south of the irish border, dublin based frank b kills it with trieste a wonderfully warp cut that sounds like it has been recovered from a dust filled dat tape. london types jack fell down take a cleaner, but no less infectious approach on for you whilst midlands type tom flynn rounds it out with the deep and bouncy going on.

nice price deal !!! finest minimalistic groove & kick monsters! only for djs. the colombian duo jose m. & tacoman have recorded on top labels like material, area remote and sphera records and have written three tracks for trapez ltd now. >what are you watching< is a tricky traxter with a cool swing programming to keep you happy on your feet and moving. this is very much a beat track but has an outstanding groove that makes it so special. raw and streetwise it makes sure things are always going fine. one of these tracks that are loose and tight at the same time. a perfect alliance.>warehouse< seems at first less funky but convinces with an hypnotic aspect and a congenial feeling to it. >kick this< is similar to >what are you watching< a strong groover with sounds in the background and a catchy vocal line. all three tracks are cool and perfect for groove addicts.

despite the watery divide between them, brooklyn-bound greg schappert and london-based tom russell have fostered a production partnership as donor / truss for the last six years, emerging today as one of technos more robust and hardworking duos. as solo artists they ve racked up notable releases between them on labels like stroboscopic artefacts, perc trax and our circula sound, outside of schapperts own miniscule imprint. meanwhile russell has been stepping out as the acid-charged mpia3, lately flexing a less is more approach with outings on avian and r&s.

parassela is the studio and live project of blawan and the analogue cops. their first release on their own label with the same name has become a collectors item in less than 40 days. now the project lands on restoration, featuring the appearance of pariah on track a1, a crossover monster of techno and garage. getting darker, a2 is an unfriendly radio-activity with a gloomy chicagoid reminiscence.

nick lapiens debut release as metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. a skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. that initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. this, his second release as metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. the titular track on the a side is a deep, psychedelic groover. melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by lapien with optimum restraint. equally pensive and gorgeous, the flood serves as a machine’s beat-less foil on the reverse. made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of jean michel jarre’s more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. expect to hear more from lapien here at sequencias. he has many more dark corners left unexplored.

making his debut on mn2s, rick wade serves up typically classy house section opening with goon hand, a piano laden cut with a funky flair. as its name suggests, sacred jazzomety explores a muted jazz-house aesthetic with great prowess, whilst mysterio, with its hazy remit, broods an air of late night, smoky intelligence.an ep that oozes depth and class from a producer you would expect nothing less from.

samuli kemppi may have begun in warm house climes as the duo sam & gigi, but he has since found his niche and fame sound tracking the deep and icy black recesses of space. 2009s komisch debut, deep space helsinki ep, birthed the galactic signature that would come to define his solo techno output for labels like prologue, mote-evolver and perc trax, meanwhile cementing his stylistic meanderings to a single, albeit flexible, narrative. parallax of one second ep is samuli kemppis third outing on m rec ltd, after the full cyclic model ep and remix inclusion on ben gibsons more than milk, and sees the fin plundering the astronomic theme once again with stellar sci-fi precision.

the animal planet is a follow up to downtown party networks last years debut on best kept secret - the machine man ep, which sold out in a matter of a few weeks. this one is a dance floor killer of no less proportions. taken from a recently released silence please compilation, presented by get physical music, and mixed by best kept secrets head honcho vidis, crazy cow bell and owls dont cry are two best selling tracks from the album. release your inner animal.

asc returns to samurai red seal in his first release for the label since 2012s out of sync & lost sync series. debuted on mary anne hobbs xfm show, polemic is yet another genre bending, tempo shuffle that brings a powerful acid line to the table. a favourite with the likes of dbridge, om unit, and sam kdc as well as label head presha, this is a tune that truly goes back to go forward. oracle slides back into a more traditional, but not any less unique asc groove, combining a heavy dubbed out bass line with other world ambience and percussive perfection. 909 rhythm track comes as a vinyl only exclusive, in the techno tradition it does what it name says it does, a dj tool for the adventurous maestro. limited blue coloured / white marbled 12 inch vinyl.

berlin based martsman steps up for the latest techno release on pushing red. shrank and nycd both weigh in at less than 130 bpm despite bucket loads of shuffle. youd be forgiven for describing these sounds as garagey. shrank has some uplifting progression and plenty of hi-hats and nycd backs it all up nicely with some dub influenced tripped out sounds. another top release from pushing red. their third this year in fact.

another (more or less) round catalogue number, another various artists ep on uncanny valley: this time its a full package with four true club bangers (at least to our ears...). on the a-side we have the heart warming label debut of the polish producer eltron john

tropics a.k.a. chris ward first appeared on planet mu last year, following up two eps with the album parodia flare. commended by pitchfork for his lush soundscapes and hazy pop, whats clear with tropics is that he listens to a lot of dance music and he cares about production values. the synth and beat programming is as competent as anything out there, and he avoids lazy indie stylings and one button bontempi organ beats – his are crafted songs, much of the pleasure lying in his gift for dynamic arrangement, which is a joy amid rafts of useful formulaically assembled house tracks.
in common with the general post-financial collapse vibe there is less sunshine in this ep than before, and he has absorbed something from a year of intensive house music listening, but chris essential qualities remain a forward-looking wistfulness, hope beneath melancholy, something even more acutely needed now than before. oh look! here comes winter.
